In the summer of 2006, when the Gulf Coast area was expecting another record season of disastrous storms, we experienced a relatively mild hurricane season. This was also the time when Via! received a grant from the Hurricane Fund for older adults with Grantmakers in Aging.
With this funding, Via! Solutions developed a plan to assist older adults and homebound indivivuals over 55 when hurricanes threaten the community.
Together, our mission is to inform and prepare older adults BEFORE an event occurs, provide evacuation information if necessary, and assist in locating important resources AFTER the storm passes.

Older adults are the most vulnerable when a hurricane or other disaster strikes the Gulf Coast. Being informed and prepared can give older adults and their families the confidence to know what to do, where to get important information, and how to utilize vital resources.
Via! is prepared to...
- Utilize Via! Center, located at 1717 Dauphin Street, as a post-emergency comfort and resource center for the older adults and emergency personnel.
- Set up an automated phone messaging device (Senior Alert Messenger, or SAM) to enhance emergency alert notifications with a personalized message to those who are registered in the program.
- Coordinate staff to provide post emergency information and resources that are available.
Don’t let the mild season of 2006 fool you into thinking a disastrous hurricane won’t happen again. Via! encourages everyone, young and old alike to...
