In 1970, Senior Citizens Services began operations in a renovated gas station located at the corner of Springhill Avenue and Bay Shore Drive. The program moved to Central Plaza Towers in 1971, where
services were provided for twenty years. Ms. Mary Abbie Berg was the first Executive Director.
In 1990 the Ahavas Chesed Synagogue moved to
a new location and the building on Dauphin Street
was renovated to provide a senior center for Mobile. The center was named the Mary Abbie Berg Senior Center. The original stained glass of the Synagogue remains in place and is still enjoyed today

In 2007, the Herbert and Fanny Meisler Health and
Fitness Building was added to the existing building
now known as the Via! Health, Fitness & Enrichment
Center. The 15,000 square foot expansion included
a gymnasium, fitness center and additional activity
rooms. The Mary Abbie Berg honor remains on
the main building of the campus. The campus was
named to honor Arlene F. Mitchell.
A history of excellence has proven Via! to have a far
reaching impact on the older population
of Mobile.
